Protect the natural beauty of your hardwood flooring
Many of the hardwood flooring products we offer provide you with superior wear, easy care, and superior resistance to staining from many common household spills such as coffee, shoe polish, lipstick, acetone, food & more.
Simply follow our easy hardwood flooring maintenance guide for steps that will help you protect your investment & keep your floors looking newer longer.
Routine Hardwood Cleaning
For regular cleaning, make sure to sweep, dust or vacuum your floor regularly to prevent the accumulation of dirt or grit that can scratch or dull the floor’s finish. If vacuuming, use the hard floor attachment & detach your beater bar.
When spills & spots occur, use a clean, damp cloth to blot them up. Tough spots caused by oil, paint, markers, makeup, wax, gum & ink may not blot as easily. For these, be sure to consult your manufacturer’s cleaning guidelines.
Avoid the following when cleaning hardwood floors:
- Cleaners based in oil, wax, polish, ammonia or abrasive materials
- Steel wool & scouring powder
- Washing or wet-mopping the floor with soap, water or any liquid detergent
- Buffing machines
Wet mopping can cause swelling, warping, delamination, or joint-line separation, all of which can void your floor’s warranty.
Preventative Care
A lot of damage can be avoided with the right preventative measures. You can take advantage of the following tips to protect your hardwood floors:
- Use good quality protective mats at all entryways to collect dirt & other substances that would otherwise get tracked onto your floors. To prevent slippage & discoloration of your floors, use an approved rug underlayment.
- Use floor protectors on furniture to minimize the chance of indentations & scratches caused by heavy objects. The heavier the furniture, the wider the floor protector should be.
- Maintain a relative humidity by running a humidifier during the dry season and an air condition or dehumidifier during the rainy season.
- Avoid sharp objects. Whether dropping an object or walking on your floors with sharp heels or cleats, you risk scratches & indents.
- Keep pet nails trimmed to avoid scratching your flooring.
- Rearrange rugs & furniture periodically to allow your floors to age evenly. UV rays from sunlight can soften the tone of certain hardwood species.
- Never slide or drag furniture.
